In today’s world, brushless DC motors are a common sight in many people’s lives. They can be found in everything from electric toothbrushes to cordless drills. In all of these applications, the objective is the same: Take an electrical input and use it to induce a back-EMF into the armature of a motor so that it spins.
However, this is a relatively recent technology. Before the invention of the brushless DC motor, there were only certain applications that could be served by an electric motor. The most common types of motors in consumer goods before the advent of the brushless DC motor were AC Induction Motors and Stepper Motors.
In their day, both were cutting-edge technologies and served their purposes well. However, they both had significant drawbacks that limited their use to particular applications such as washing machines or computer printers.
Many brushless DC motor manufacturers today have been working to increase the number of applications that brushless DC motors can serve by improving performance and reducing cost. In doing so, they have been able to keep up with the changing lifestyles of people in modern society.
Difference Between Brush Motors and Brushless Motors
What is the difference between brush motors and brushless motors?
There are numerous types of electric motors out there, but most models fall into two categories — brushed or brushless. Generally speaking, brushed motors are cheaper while brushless tend to be stronger with larger power densities. Both have their advantages and disadvantages which is why they both remain popular in the market.
Both brushed and brushless electric motors work in a similar fashion by converting electrical power into rotational motion. However, the way that they accomplish this task is quite different.
Brushed DC motors require physical contact between metal brushes and copper commutator segments on the armature of the motor. This usually happens two or four times per revolution of the armature depending upon the design of the motor. It involves complex machining that increases the total cost of production.
A brushless DC motor, on the other hand, has no physical contact between stationary and rotating components after installation which means it does not suffer from wear issues caused by friction or contact fatigue. This also means that it tends to outperform brushed motors in both torque and speed.
Brushless DC Motor – How it Works
A brushless dc motor in general works by using an inverter to control the speed and torque of a three-phase AC input. This input is used to create a rotating magnetic field in the stator that is then redirected into another stationary magnetic field by a rotor. The rotor’s magnetic field interacts with that of the stator to induce a current into the armature which causes it to rotate.
The rotating armature of this motor contains permanent magnets which are rotated by the magnetic field created by the stator. This rotational motion is used to turn input power into additional electrical power that can be directed elsewhere for use.
Brushless DC Motor Applications
Brushless DC motor common applications can be found in many different electronic devices.
Household appliances such as fans and hair dryers; Consumer electronics like computer and printer components; Lifts and shuttles in factories that require frequent usage.
At the end of the day, there are a wide variety of brushless DC motors out on the market today. As such, it is important to choose the right one for your specific needs and applications.
Brushless DC Motor Market Overview
The worldwide market for brushless DC motors is expected to grow at a CAGR of roughly 2% over the next five years. The primary reason behind this growth is that there are more appliances and electronic devices than ever before which require motors inside them.
Many large players in the global economy manufacture their own models of brushless DC motors to fulfill demand in the market. However, there are also many small-time manufacturers that need to be taken into consideration.
Companies like UQM Technologies Inc., Maxon Motor, and Advanced Motion Controls Inc. primarily focus on the production of brushless DC motors for niche markets.
