Press Brake Manufacturers
Press brake manufacturers and suppliers today are continuously growing in number. Competition is fierce. And to stay competitive, makers are always on the lookout for ways to offer better service and/or lower-cost build options. For this reason, press brakes that can handle complex parts and/or high production runs may be just the ticket.
What is a Press Brake?
Press brakes are machines designed to bend sheet metal, with a vise-like grip on the upper and lower portion of a piece of material.
They have a deep throat area that accommodates the shorter, thicker stock used for large parts more easily than machine tools such as shears or press brakes with smaller throats (typically due to design constraints). Press brakes are traditionally more difficult to program than less complex machines, but today’s best-of-breed software is reducing the learning curve for new users.
Suppliers are also making it easier for customers to customize their equipment setups with accessories that are designed to increase the machine’s flexibility.
Two good examples are clamp arms/adapters and modular tooling systems—both of which can improve capacity by allowing users to better match the size of a part against the throat depth of the brake, maximizing both.
CNC Press Brake Types
Programmable and CNC press brakes come in two varieties:
1. Manual-tooling machines that require a programmer/operator to load tools and make adjustments after each bend is made.
2. Tool-changer CNC machines, which use robotic technology to change out tools when necessary so the operator does not have to.
Some suppliers are even offering turnkey operations that incorporate both types of equipment into a single platform.
Industries Where Press Brakes Are Used
The following are some of the industries that rely on press brakes:
- Toys/Sporting goods
- Transportation equipment
- Food processing & more
With wide application, it is not surprising that press brakes continue to be one of the most widely used types of sheet metalworking machines.
Press Brake Market Overview
According to estimates from Global Market Insights, Inc., the press brake market is expected to grow at a 4.8% CAGR through 2020—reaching 18.4 million units for a total value of $10 billion.
Press brakes will continue to dominate the machine tool segment over this same period, though other types of sheet metal forming machinery will see growth, too.
The metal forming machinery market is expected to reach $20 billion in 2020. For the reasons outlined above—and more—press brake suppliers are taking steps to help users become leaner and more competitive in today’s global economy. Tailoring equipment for each user’s needs is just one-way suppliers are trying to help.

As a consumer, it’s important to research any machine before making a purchase—including press brakes. You should always talk with your supplier about his/her business practices, warranties, and financing options.
Make sure to compare apples to apples, as much as possible. Comparing machines based on the number of tons per hour is just one way to do it.
